Ah the book of Proverbs, it seems to hold no context other than a poetic look at wisdom, and I love it.
With so much of it sounding so relevant to what’s going on in the world today, I wonder how a book written thousands of years ago can hold such truth today.
Chapter 1 verse 7 says “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” And I can’t help but think that for all of those in the world right now who see themselves as geniuses, they know nothing when compared to the great wisdom of the writers of Proverbs.
Proverbs 1:8 “Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching.”
For all those people who think that women weren’t valued in Old Testament times, answer me this, why would a father tell his son to obey the teachings of his mother if she didn’t hold great wisdom and value?
Perhaps it’s due to the fact that only foolish men held no value in women, and only wise men knew how valuable and important a woman truly is, especially to her children.
Chapter 2 goes on to say that men who seek wisdom and live “upright” are the ones who will “find the knowledge of God.” Verse 12 introduces “men of perverted speech” who “rejoice in doing evil” whose “paths are crooked” and they are “devious in their ways” meaning it will take wisdom to distinguish between good and evil, and the wise who have sought God’s knowledge will overcome the temptations of the perverse.
Fast forward to verse 16 we see that the enemy will use women to tempt the wise into behaving foolishly, specifically the adulteress “with her smooth words”
Again that shows us that women have power, whether it will be used for good or evil is the question. For even wise men can be lured into trouble with the use of a woman with evil interests.
In case you’ve noticed, there is a theme here. Parents, men and women, you have extremely important roles to play in acting out this wisdom.
With mothers day fast approaching I thought I would talk to you parents out there.
Father’s, you are to lead you’re children and show them true wisdom, show them where to get this wisdom and show them what to do with it. Warn your children father’s, for the enemy will use whatever means necessary to pervert what you have taught them. Like in the times of King Solomon women, or rather the lust for women is the surest of all the ways to bring a man down.
Chapter 5 of Proverbs should be a go-to for father’s who have sons, it tells of how sweet the temptation is and how bitter it will taste once given in to.
Mother’s, don’t ever think that you are of less importance than your husband. Though he may be the leader of the family, you are his crown! 12:4 “An excellent wife is the crown of her husband.” A woman is who makes a household strong, or weak, 14:1 says “the wisest of women builds her house” it also gives a warning against folly “…but folly with her own hands tears it down.”
Please do not misinterpret what the book of proverbs is saying with its many warnings against foolish and adulterous women, for however much power a woman has in folly, she also has in wisdom. It’s only a matter of which path she will use.
“With great wisdom, comes great responsibility”…. okay that’s a variation of what Peter Parkers uncle told him before he died but it’s probably good enough to be added to Proverbs. That path of wisdom that either men or women take, means it comes with responsibility. That’s why I wanted to talk to parents before mothers and fathers day arrive, because as good as it is to take that day and receive gifts and accept the honour that parents should receive. Remember that being a parent is way more than just having kids, you will bestow on them your wisdom, and your wisdom matters more than what anyone else will teach them. The only question is, where did your wisdom come from?
Foolishness disguises itself as wisdom, if that isn’t evident in how people live today then you may want to ensure that your wisdom… is actually wisdom.
People today want to act like they have it all figured out, they have all the answers, they don’t need God. The truth is they truly believe they know what they are doing, but they don’t. Like the Roman guards that Jesus forgave while hanging from the cross, people today inflict pain and suffering all the while believing they’re doing the right thing. Like Jesus though, we should be ready and willing with a hand of forgiveness.
Foolishness disguises itself as wisdom, and for the foolish, it’s very hard to tell them apart. For the wise, who are truly wise they will act with love and compassion to help the foolish see the error in their ways.
No one is past the point of forgiveness and for Christian parents we need to show this wisdom to our kids so that they too will offer the loving rebuke instead of the condemnation brought on by enabling the foolish into thinking that they are wise.
I suppose some will say that wisdom is subjective, and to a certain degree that may be true. But true heavenly wisdom like that bestowed on the person who earnestly asks for it, is one of a kind. For it comes straight from God.
We may see a lot of goings on around the world today that look like nothing more than folly, but remember fellow Christian that God is all knowing and holds more wisdom than we can possibly imagine, He, is in control.
Our God is powerful, awesome in all His glory! Even when the masses reject Him, He offers salvation and through the wisdom He has given us, we should be extending a hand instead of pointing a finger.
